For this post on social bookmarking/tagging, I chose to use Stumbleupon as an example. As you may have seen from my widget on the left, it's one of my favorite websites to go to when I have a little time to kill :)
The definition of social bookmarking, which I'm stealing from dictionary.com, is "a method for storing and managing bookmarks of Web pages with individually chosen keywords". Basically, it's like our del.ici.ous account- except WAY more fun in my opinion! This technology is very user-friendly and very easy to use. You can "surf" with out without an account, the plus to having an account being that the website will recognize what you like and find more things that interest you.
I have been using this technology for about a year, so now it's your turn! Just go to www.stumbleupon.com; there is a list of categories you can choose at the right that interest you. I usually look up tags like photography, animals, arts, and gadgets, but find something that you would really like to learn more about. There will be a bar in the top so that when you are ready looking at the current page, simply click "Stumble" and it will take you to the next! Have fun (and don't get addicted)!

I think I may have to try this out! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI have heard a lot of good things about this site. I have only visited it once or twice but never really taken the time to use it... maybe I should!
ReplyDeleteAnother technology that reads your mind or your keyboard? Big Brother at it's best!! Or its worst, watch the MSNBC Documentary on GOOGLE, and it will enlighten you about how GOOGLE never deletes anything, everything you have ever searched can be found and used to identify you!! As you get older you will understand just how scary that concept is!! As for your post, I love it, a new fresh twist on boring tagging is a great alternative. GOOD JOB!!
ReplyDeleteI really like these social bookmarking sites. Before this class, I never thought about using them, but now I can really think about utilizing them for my classroom.
